What is Steadi-Two?

Steadi-Two is a tremor reducing glove for Essential Tremor.  The glove is battery free and works instantly.

This design is, incredibly, based on earthquake proof engineering.  Likened to a see-saw in a playground.  The tremor reducing disk is controlled by custom-made magnets, which respond to your tremor by providing an equal and opposite force – reducing the ‘magnitude’ of the tremor.

Benchtop testing demonstrated an 80% reduction of tremor amplitude!

How the Steadi-Two works

The glove works instantly.  You slip the glove onto your hand, adjust it to fit, then place the stabiliser on –  it’s that simple!

The Steadi-Two has a disk – controlled by two magnets, moving in the opposite direction to your tremor – in doing so, lowering the intensity of the tremor!

The amazing Steadiwear engineers were inspired by earthquake technology!

Engineers experimented with multiple technologies including weights, non-Newtonian fluid dampers, powered actuators AND traditional tuned mass dampers.  At the end of the day the reliability, effectiveness and absolute simplicity of magnetic stabilisers won the contest.  The technology that keeps buildings upright during an earthquake….well it is now all stored within one amazing lightweight, compact, battery free glove that controls hand tremor!

Steadi-Two is approved for use by the Australian TGA.

Tremors can be debilitating and cause the simplest of daily activities such as eating, drinking and writing to be an absolute challenge.  Steadi-Two works with you to stabilise your hand and achieve these activities with more ease, comfort and control.

The activity you want to achieve with the Steadi-Two?  Well that is totally in your hands!

The Steadi-Two is designed to work most effectively for people with mild to marked tremors in the wrist and forearm.

Tremors are measured by frequency.  The Steadi-Two glove will be most effective for people that have tremors measuring between 5-8hz.

Steadi-wear are currently undertaking research and development on a glove that suits people with a  lower frequency tremor (such as is often seen in Parkinson’s disease) – Please follow our socials to be the first to learn about the Parkinson’s Steadi-Glove, we hope to have some exciting news soon!

The Steadi-Two system allows full range of motion while resisting multiple tremor directions that are proven to be the most common in Essential tremor.

The Steadi-Two stabilizer unit contains a small magnet. If you are undergoing an MRI, have a cardiac pacemaker or other implantable medical electronic devices, please consult your healthcare provider prior to using the glove.

For the Steadi-Two we recommend that you wash the Lycra glove after every 2 weeks of regular use or when you feel it’s necessary. Before you wash the glove, the damper should be detached.

You can wash your glove with different methods:

  • Machine wash in gentle cycle (cold water). Place glove in portable pouch before putting into the washing machine.
  • Hang to dry or tumble dry on low heat setting.
  • Hand-wash with warm water.

Practice good housekeeping to keep dust and contamination to a minimum.

Why would you choose to recommend Steadi-Two?

Steadi-Two is designed  to reduce hand tremor and assist with limited hand and arm mobility to do activities of a person’s choosing – whether it is eating, drinking, crafting or using IT. Conditions that may contribute to limited hand and arm mobility include Essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, post-stroke deficits, Huntington’s disease and spinal cord injury.

How do I know that Steadi-Two will suit the person I’m working with?

Steadi-Two works most effectively for people with mild to moderate hand tremor. The tremor causes people regularly to spill food while eating, or leads people to bring their heads at least halfway towards their utensil to meet food.

From a clinical perspective, the Steadi-Two has been shown to be effective for people whose tremors are between the 5.25 – 8Hz

Smart phone apps such as ‘My Frequency’ or ‘Tremor Analysis’ can assist in measurement of tremor frequency, if required.

You can watch videos of patients using the Steadi-Two Glove;

John uses Steadi-Two

Betty uses Steady-Two

Steadi-Two provides limited benefit to:

  • People with intermittent tremor.
  • People with severe tremor, large-amplitude tremor (above 12Hz) or dystonia.
  • People whose hand tremor does not interfere with eating, or who spill only rarely when using utensils to bring food to their mouth (typically tremors below 5Hz).

The amount of benefit will also vary depending on factors that affect the intensity of a person’s tremor at any given moment (such as medications, sleep, stress, and exercise).

Parkinsons Disease and Steadi-wear

On testing, the makers of Steadi-Two have found that people with Parkinson’s disease will usually have a lower frequency tremor, and hence with the glove currently in production, will feel little to no effect when trialling the glove.  To this end, Steadiwear are currently in research and development of a Parkinson’s specific steadi-glove.  Please join our socials – as we hope to have exciting news on this front soon!

How effective is Steadi-Two?

Preliminary data from 10 patients is presented here. By kinematic analysis, a decrease in the tremor amplitude of acceleration greater than 20% from baseline was defined as a significant improvement. For static tasks, 6/10 patients improved with the true glove, while 5/10 improved with the sham. For dynamic tasks, 8/10 improved with the true glove, while 7/10 improved with the sham. This was calculated comparing the patient’s three worst tasks. By the FTM scale, those patients that had improved by kinematic analysis had a 0.81-point score clinical improvement across all static tasks with the real glove. and a 0.30-point improvement with the sham. There was a 0.57-point improvement in dynamic tasks with the real glove, and a 0.39-point improvement with the sham.

Conclusions: Clinical and kinematic data demonstrating the effect of a glove-based tremor dampener for ET has been presented in this study. This preliminary analysis may demonstrate a greater tremor reduction using the true glove when compared to the sham, but larger sample sizes are required to validate these findings. This study is in progress and more patients are being recruited. This data will be critical in informing further development of this device and similar assistive technology for ET.
